A closeup of abundant raccoon butterflyfish and ringtail surgeonfish Jack and Hilary at Disappearing Sands Beach, Kona Coast -- aptly named because the sand is swallowed by the sea each night, and disappears all winter! Snorkeling at Hapuna State Beach paid off with a visit from mom, dad, and junior sea turtle. This cute cowfish stuck with Jack for about 10 minutes. Maybe the fish food was a factor?

It's not easy to pet a fish, but Jackie got to pet a ringtail surgeonfish in the middle of this maelstrom, which also includes racoon butterflyfish and milletseed butterflyfish. Dad's birthday dinner at Balboa Bay Club, Newport Beach. Jack Jr. takes a much-needed break from the mountainside hike, beside a calming, secluded brook. We told Jr. to give a sign if he wanted to go above 800 feet, which he did, shooting this photo from about 1,000 feet above the Pacific. See the boat below? He couldn't either!

On a layover on Oahu before heading home, the family visited one last beach, Lanikai, where lots of movie stars, including Michelle Pfeiffer, have homes.
